The cruise line Spirit of Adventure
is a division of Saga Holidays and was founded in 2005. It provides casual
cruise holidays to younger British passengers, whereas her sister line Saga
Cruises is for people over the age of 50. The only ship Spirit of
Adventure is small enough to sail to many faraway ports, therefore a range
of exotic voyages are offered every year. A wide variety of shore excursions
and onboard lectures by guest speakers are featured.
Spirit of Adventure came to Hong
Kong twice before in January 2007 and January 2010. This year I was glad to
welcome her again, which was surely the last time, since she will be sold to
a new German cruise line in May. I would like to thank Grant Laversuch, the
Operations Director of Saga Cruises, for arranging the final opportunity of
visit for me and a colleague.
The vessel arrived in our city at noon
of 19th February and stayed overnight at Ocean Terminal. Hong Kong was one
of her destinations in a series of Asia itineraries, where the last port was
Subic Bay in the Philippines. After that she would continue with her journey
to other Southeast Asian countries and then be back to Europe for the
farewell season.
Our visit was scheduled on 20th
February. We boarded the ship at around 10:00 and met two crew from the
Cruise Sales Team. They took us to have a look at different amenities,
starting from the upper open decks, followed by the indoor facilities on
lower decks.
Our first stop was the Top of the Yacht
open-air cinema on Deck 8, and then Deck 6 with the majority of public rooms
such as a library, bars, salon, a shop, a buffet restaurant and the outdoor
swimming pool. Next we went to the Sirocco Lounge on Deck 5 and the Dining
Room on Deck 4. After passing through Deck 3 with cabins and the crew-only
Deck 2, we reached the lowest level on Deck 1 with an indoor pool, sauna,
treatment rooms and the gymnasium. They also showed us all categories of
cabins including the most luxurious Owners' Suites.
The virtual ship tour in the previous
section gives you more details about the onboard amenities. Our visit lasted for an hour and we
finally disembarked at 11:00. Many thanks to the crew for guiding us around and
introducing every aspects about Spirit of Adventure. The vessel
departed at 21:00 that night and headed to Huangpu/Guangzhou in China.
The ship Saga Pearl II in Saga
Cruises will be transferred to Spirit of Adventure and renamed Quest for
Adventure in May this year. I look forward to the itineraries of this
new ship in the coming years, and also hope to see her in Hong Kong very
soon. |
